Preseason Week 2 Preview

Brett comes to Broadway…the Bills go to Toronto…JaMarcus faces Vince…and lots of games on national TV.

It’s Week 2 of the NFL preseason and the schedule is packed with scenarios — some of them unexpected.

Of course, the most unexpected of all will be the debut of BRETT FAVRE at quarterback for the New York Jets on Saturday night.  That’s New York – not Green Bay.

The NFL’s all-time leader in TD passes (442), passing yards (61,655) and consecutive starts by a QB (253) has added another record to his dossier – two top-25 jerseys.  Since Favre was traded to the Jets by Green Bay on August 6, NFLShop.com has sold more than 12,500 of his new No. 4 Jets jersey, ranking it No. 1 in the top-25 of NFL player jerseys.  No. 2 of the best-sellers since April?  Favre’s Packers jersey.  It’s the first time ever that a player has had two jerseys in the top 25 at the same time.

It’s only preseason and already records are being set!

And who knows what will develop this week:

  • PITTSBURGH at BUFFALO in Toronto (Thursday, 7:30 PM ET): America’s No. 1 sport comes to Canada’s biggest city.

The Buffalo Bills embark on a multi-year schedule in Toronto at the Rogers Centre on Thursday night.  They will play three preseason games in Toronto, one every other year through 2012, and five annual regular-season games beginning this December 7 against Miami.

“This is another step in our regional approach: heading to Toronto and bringing meaningful product — meaning games — was always our long-term vision,” says Bills COO RUSS BRANDON.

On the field, just-signed Steelers QB BYRON LEFTWICH (the six-year NFL veteran who will replace CHARLIE BATCH, collarbone) should see action as backup to BEN ROETHLISBERGER.  For Buffalo, starter TRENT EDWARDS wants to correct what he calls “some forced passes and inaccurate throws” in Week 1 against Washington.  “We want to work those kinks out,” he says.

  • CAROLINA at PHILADELPHIA (Thursday, FOX, 8:00 PM ET): The QBs are getting ready!

He threw only one pass Saturday night in his return to action from an elbow injury that forced him to miss most of last season, but Panthers QB JAKE DELHOMME was excited just to get back on the field.  And he’s ready for more.

“I know I’m going to play a whole lot more this week and the following week,” says Delhomme.

His counterpart with the Eagles, DONOVAN MC NABB, looked crisp against Pittsburgh on Friday night.  McNabb led two scoring drives on Philly’s first two possessions, completing 10 of 13 attempts for 97 yards and a TD.  “He played really well,” said Eagles head coach ANDY REID.  “He was a plus.”

  • OAKLAND at TENNESSEE (Friday, FOX, 8:00 PM ET): No. 1 overall vs. No. 3 overall.

In other words, Raiders QB JA MARCUS RUSSELL, the first pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, in his first meeting with Titans QB VINCE YOUNG, the third choice overall in the 2006 draft.

But there’s more in this one.  The Titans were exuberant with the performance Saturday night of their 2008 first-round selection CHRIS JOHNSON.  The RB from East Carolina broke off a 66-yard TD run against St. Louis and compiled a combined 100 yards.  “He has another level of speed,” says Young.

And the Raiders were just as pleased with their ‘08 first-rounder, DARREN MC FADDEN.  The Arkansas RB rushed 12 times for 48 yards Friday night and came close to breaking some big gainers.  “I think we have something special with our three backs (McFadden, JUSTIN FARGAS and MICHAEL BUSH),” says Raiders head coach LANE KIFFIN.

  • WASHINGTON at NEW YORK JETS (Saturday, NFL Network, 7:00 PM ET): Think Favre hasn’t captivated New York?  He’s been all over the dailies, both front and back.  NYC Mayor MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG welcomed him to the city and presented him with a “Broadway” street sign.  His first practice with the Jets brought out a record 10,500-plus fans.  And NFL Network quickly adapted and made this one of the week’s national television games.

Now, after all of the hullabaloo, it’s onto the reason Favre came back — football, on the field, against real competition.  “I’ll do my best, and hopefully that’s enough,” says Favre.  “There are no guarantees, but I hope to bring leadership and durability to the Jets.”

The quarterbacks for the Redskins have certainly brought leadership to the team in its first two games this summer, both wins.  Starter JASON CAMPBELL and backup TODD COLLINS have combined to go 25-for-32 for 241 yards and two touchdowns with only one interception in those games – all while learning new head coach JIM ZORN’s version of the West Coast offense.

  • NEW ENGLAND at TAMPA BAY (Sunday, NFL Network, 8:00 PM ET): Quarterback derbies and RB development will be on the agenda Sunday night.

The QB starters are set, of course, for these teams — TOM BRADY for the Patriots and JEFF GARCIA for the Buccaneers.  But the backups are not set, so the fight for depth-chart rankings will be furious Sunday.  For New England, it’s a battle between MATT CASSEL, MATT GUTIERREZ and KEVIN O’CONNELL.  For Tampa Bay, it’s BRIAN GRIESE, JOSH JOHNSON, LUKE MC COWN and CHRIS SIMMS going at it.  DBs, be ready!

On the RB side, New England newcomer LA MONT JORDAN, the former Raider, will seek to duplicate his performance of last week when he rumbled for 76 yards and a TD against Baltimore.  Jordan is aiming to back up LAURENCE MARONEY.  “I’m trying to make this ballclub,” he says.

Tampa Bay’s MICHAEL BENNETT, acquired last year at the trading deadline, aided his cause for playing time against stiff competition, including new/old Buc WARRICK DUNN, by turning in a 68-yard, one-TD rushing performance Saturday night against Miami.

  • CLEVELAND at NEW YORK GIANTS (Monday, ESPN, 8:00 PM ET): There is another team in town, some New Yorkers may have to be reminded in the face of Favre-mania, and that’s the Super Bowl XLII champion New York Giants.

“No one cares about us,” kids Giants RB BRANDON JACOBS.  “Let’s call it what it is.”

Well, not quite, Brandon.  There will be 80,000-plus screaming fans at Giants Stadium Monday night as Eli and the boys play their first home game since Super Bowl.

It will be the second New York opponent in a row for the Browns, who lost to the Jets last week 24-20.  And it’s a forerunner to another Monday-nighter in two months when the Giants visit Cleveland on October 13.

Against the Jets, QB DEREK ANDERSON, who basically came out of nowhere in 2007 to make the Pro Bowl, throw for 3,787 yards and 29 TDs, and lead the Browns to a 10-6 record, picked up where he left off last season.  Anderson, in his one series, completed four of five passes for one TD.

NFL TEAMS IMPLEMENT FAN CODE OF CONDUCT

The NFL and all 32 NFL clubs have created a fan code of conduct to help promote a positive fan environment at NFL stadiums, it was announced today.

The fan code of conduct is designed to set clear expectations and encourage a stadium environment that is enjoyable for all fans. Teams may add additional provisions to the standard code based on local circumstances or preferences. Each team will communicate its code of conduct during the preseason to season-ticket holders and fans through mailings, online, and in-stadium signage, and other messages.

“The in-stadium experience is critically important to the NFL, our clubs and our fans and it will be a major focus this season,” said NFL Commissioner ROGER GOODELL. “We are committed to improving the fan experience in every way we can — from the time fans arrive in the parking lot to when they depart the stadium. We want everyone to be able to come to our stadiums and enjoy the entire day.”

The code of conduct is intended to address behavior that detracts from the gameday experience. Any fan in violation of these provisions will be subject to ejection without refund and loss of ticket privileges for future games.

In addition to the fan code of conduct, the NFL and its clubs will evaluate fan feedback and existing programs to ensure their effectiveness and shape the development of new programs.

These measures are designed to build on the many outstanding programs already in place at NFL stadiums to enhance the fan experience.

FAN CODE OF CONDUCT

“The National Football League and its teams are committed to creating a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable experience for all fans, both in the stadium and in the parking lot. We want all fans attending our games to enjoy the experience in a responsible fashion. When attending a game, you are required to refrain from the following behaviors:

· Behavior that is unruly, disruptive, or illegal in nature

· Intoxication or other signs of alcohol impairment that results in irresponsible behavior

· Foul or abusive language or obscene gestures

· Interference with the progress of the game (including throwing objects onto the field)

· Failing to follow instructions of stadium personnel

· Verbal or physical harassment of opposing team fans

“Event patrons are responsible for their conduct as well as the conduct of their guests and/or persons occupying their seats. Stadium staff will promptly intervene to support an environment where event patrons, their guests, and other fans can enjoy the event free from the above behavior. Event patrons and guests who violate these provisions will be subject to ejection without refund and loss of ticket privileges for future games.”

COMMISSIONER FINDS NO TAMPERING WITH BRETT FAVRE

Commissioner ROGER GOODELL today informed the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings that he had completed his review of tampering charges filed by the Packers against the Vikings and found no violations of league policy.

In his letter to the Packers and Vikings, Commissioner Goodell said that, while those involved acknowledged conversations between BRETT FAVRE and Vikings coaches, “None of those conversations suggest that Favre was soliciting a job or that other teams were soliciting his services.”

Unrestricted Free Agency Period Ends; 79 Re-Sign, 132 Switch Teams

Seventy-nine veteran free agents re-signed with their old teams this year during the free-agency signing period, while 132 signed with new teams, the National Football League announced today.  The five-month UFA signing period, under terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the league and players, ended July 22.

The Miami Dolphins signed the most unrestricted free agents from other teams (10), while the Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans, Minnesota Vikings and Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed eight apiece.

There were a total of 311 unrestricted free agents this year.  The total player pool is approximately 1,700.

Three of this year’s 67 restricted free agents signed with a new team – Oakland cornerback CHRIS CARR with Tennessee, Tampa Bay cornerback KALVIN PEARSON with Detroit, and Indianapolis tight end BEN UTECHT with Cincinnati.  Sixty-four restricted free agents returned to their former clubs.  The period for restricted free agents to accept offers from other teams ended April 18.

The 135 total free agents who switched teams represent only eight percent of all NFL players.  Of 429 players who were free agents in the various categories of the system, 287 signed new contracts with either new teams or their old clubs.

Under the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, players without 2008 contracts who had four or more seasons of free agency experience qualified to be “unrestricted free agents” and were free to sign with any club between February 29 and July 22.

If a player’s prior club made a 110 percent tender on or before June 1, the prior club retained exclusive negotiating rights after July 22 if the player did not sign with another club.  If the player and club are unable to negotiate a contract by the 10th week of the regular season (November 11), the player may not play the remainder of the season.  If the player sits out the season, he becomes an unrestricted free agent next year.

Under the CBA, restricted free agents are those players who have three seasons of free agency experience and are subject to compensation and/or right of first refusal.

A “transition” player is a designated restricted or unrestricted free agent whose team must tender a one-year contract at the average of the 10 highest-paid players of 2007 at the transition player’s position, or a 20 percent increase, whichever is greater.  A “franchise” player is a designated restricted or unrestricted free agent whose team must tender a one-year contract at the average of the five highest-paid players at the franchise player’s position in 2007, or a 20 percent increase, whichever is greater.

A comparison of free agent movement since the current CBA went into effect 16 years ago:

FOOTBALL’S BACK! SIX INDUCTED IN CANTON, COLTS TAKE ON REDSKINS IN HALL OF FAME GAME

A look back…then full speed ahead!

That’s the agenda this weekend in Canton, Ohio, birthplace of the NFL.  First, the past is saluted with the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremonies on Saturday.  Then on Sunday, it’s fast-forward to the present as the first game of 2008 — the Hall of Fame Game — signals that, indeed, NFL football has returned!

On Saturday evening, history will be at the forefront as the Hall of Fame class of 2008 is inducted with six players sporting their new yellow Hall blazers in front of at least 70 returning Hall of Fame members and 15,000 fans.

It is a unique induction class.  Four of the inductees are one-way defensive players – the most such defenders in a class since the Hall opened in 1963.

The Hall of Fame class of 2008 is a formidable one:

·         DE FRED DEAN (1975-85) used a combination of quickness, speed and strength as a defensive end for San Diego and San Francisco to excel as a pass rusher.  Had a career-best 17.5 sacks in 1983.  Selected to four Pro Bowls.

·         CB DARRELL GREEN (1983-02) was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1990s as a cornerback.  Known for his speed, intercepted 54 passes in his career, including in 19 consecutive seasons, an NFL record.  Chosen for seven Pro Bowls.

·         WR ART MONK (1980-95) set then-NFL records for receptions in a season (106 in 1984), most consecutive games with a reception (164) and career catches (820).  Had 50-or-more receptions in nine seasons, while gaining 1,000 yards five times.

·         CB EMMITT THOMAS (1966-78) posted a club-record 58 career interceptions with Kansas City.  The total ranks ninth all-time.  Had three pickoffs in ‘69 playoffs, including one in Super Bowl IV.  Undrafted free agent, went to five Pro Bowls.

·         LB ANDRE TIPPETT (1982-93) held New England club records at retirement for career sacks (100.0), sacks in a season (18.5, 1984) and opponent fumbles recovered (19).  Led the AFC with 16.5 sacks in 1987.  Named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1980s.  In five Pro Bowls.

·         T GARY ZIMMERMAN (1986-97) started in 169 consecutive games with Minnesota and Denver.  Named to NFL All-Decade Teams of 1980s and 1990s.  Anchored offensive line that helped Denver lead NFL in combined yards in 1996 and 1997.

“Whether I deserved to play in the NFL or deserve even to be in the Hall of Fame, I just loved the game, loved to play, loved being out there,” says Monk, speaking for all his ‘08 co-inductees.

NFL Network and ESPN will be all over the festivities.  NFL Network’s coverage begins on Friday at 2:30 PM ET with live press conferences featuring the enshrinees.  On Saturday, the network kicks off a two-hour pre-induction show at 4:00 PM ET followed by all the ceremonies at 6:00 PM ET and one-hour wrap-up show.  ESPN will televise the entire induction ceremonies on Saturday at 6:00 PM ET.

The next night, it’s the first football game of the year — the annual Hall of Fame Game at 8:00 PM ET on NBC.  The Indianapolis Colts will be “hosted” by the Washington Redskins, who are having a big weekend with two of their former stars – Green and Monk — being inducted.

As with every NFL game, preseason or regular season, there will be interesting storylines on Sunday.

For the Colts, quarterback PEYTON MANNING — who has started every regular-season and playoff game for Indy for the past 10 years — will not start against Washington.  Manning has had surgery on his left knee and is expected to miss the preseason, so his four-season backup, JIM SORGI, should start.  Also probably seeing action will be newly signed veteran quarterbacks QUINN GRAY and JARED LORENZEN.

For the Redskins — 4-0 lifetime in Hall of Fame Games – there will be lot of “news.”

Sunday night will be the first game as an NFL head coach for the Redskins’ JIM ZORN, who started at quarterback in the first game ever for the Seattle Seahawks in 1976.  Zorn is more thrilled by the setting than his debut.

“The Hall of Fame Game is a special game,” he says.  “It is the only game going on at the time and it honors a tremendous history of Hall of Fame players.  That’s what I’m most excited about.”

Another well-known name will be making his Redskins debut — JASON TAYLOR, the 11-year Miami Dolphins defensive end who was acquired in a trade last week.

“I know this is a good football team,” says Taylor of his new club.  “They had success last year and there is no reason to believe we can’t have it this year.  I like what I see on defense.  On offense, we have a good young quarterback in JASON CAMPBELL.”

Rookies on both teams will be the lynchpin of the weekend in symbolizing the NFL’s past and its future.

Colts and Redskins rookies will be the last of their 2008 class to visit the Hall of Fame in a program that was instituted this year to teach incoming NFL players about the history of pro football and give them a greater appreciation of the league and the opportunities and responsibilities ahead.

The idea was inspired by 2007 Hall of Fame inductee MICHAEL IRVIN in a conversation with NFL Commissioner ROGER GOODELL last August in Canton.

“…AND, NOW, TO PRESENT THE HONOR…”

Always of interest are the names of the “presenters” of the Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees on their special day.  This year, three sons, two NFL owners and a former owner will have the honors.

Commissioner Goodell — Buffalo Bills Training Camp

BUFFALO BILLS OWNER RALPH WILSON: I had introduced the next gentleman a little while ago to the team, he’s your boss, my boss, everybody. The boss of everybody. The commissioner of the NFL has come in here.  It’s an honor and a privilege for you to say hello to Commissioner Roger Goodell.

NFL COMMISSIONER ROGER GOODELL: Thank you, Ralph. Good morning. It’s certainly an honor to be here. As you know, I’m from western New York so it’s great to be home again and get a chance to attend my first training camp in the 2008 season. I did have a chance, as Ralph said, to speak with the team as well as Senator Schumer and it’s exciting to have football back and we’re certainly excited about being here to be a part of it.

Q: On status of small market teams and conversation with the Senator:

RG: The nature of the conversation was to find out how the Bills are doing and fortunately that’s good news. The effort here to regionalize the team further into southern Ontario and into Toronto has been a very big success for the team and I think that’s something we’re all proud of, the fact that we can now make the team stronger here in western New York. That’s good for the team and it’s good for the fans.

On Toronto ticket status:

The game hasn’t been played yet so I think at this stage right now this is the way that they’re marketing the games – the whole series and the individual games – and I’m confident that the game’s going to be well received there.

On Brett Favre and his involvement:

I was asked to get involved. We had a charge as it relates to tampering, which is a very important rule from our standpoint. And then I was asked to be involved with some various discussions between the parties, which is an issue that is important for the Green Bay Packers. They have rights here. It’s important for Brett Favre. He has rights also. And I’m glad to see that they’re all productive discussions and they’re talking directly to one another. They’re both important to the league going forward and hopefully they’ll reach a proper resolution.

On having any input in Brett’s decision to hold off for a couple of days:

I didn’t, and from my standpoint these are decisions that the team and Brett are going to have to make individually based on what their desires are. The most important thing is that they’re communicating properly and they both understand what’s important to one another.

On stance of tampering investigation:

We’re in the middle of the investigation. Hopefully we can finish it up quickly, but as soon as we get to a conclusion we’ll announce it.

On the concerns of the allegation:

We take every tampering charge seriously. As you know, we did discipline a club earlier this year for a violation of the tampering policy. It’s been an important policy so we will enforce it.

On importance of Brett Favre if he decides to come back:

Brett Favre’s a great player, a great competitor, and I think it’s been a great reflection on the Packers and the NFL. So if Brett Favre wants to return and play, I think that would be a great thing for the fans and for the league.

On any indication that Favre has made a commitment to coming back:

I’ll let Brett Favre speak for himself. I think Brett is very capable of doing that. He doesn’t need a spokesman.

On Marshawn Lynch and his incident being a league issue:

I spoke to Marshawn this morning. I met with Marshawn and he understands his responsibilities as an NFL player. I think the facts are clear on the case at this point in time and I don’t plan on any discipline.

On Marshawn’s response:

He understands the responsibility. He understands what it means to be an NFL player and how he has to represent himself, his teammates, and the Buffalo Bills, and he knows how important that is.

On talks with the Senator and Mr. Wilson on future with the Bills:

We’re talking about the future of the Bills and what we can continue to do to make sure that the Bills continue to be successful here in Western New York. And we did discuss that. We’ve talked about the initial steps here as far as regionalizing to southern Ontario and the Toronto series. And that has been a very positive step for the Bills in western New York.

On decision for no punishment for Lynch:

Because it was reduced to a traffic violation and I think when you look at the facts and understand exactly what happened after some of the initial reports, I think that it’s not a violation of our personal conduct policy. On the other hand, Marshawn understands that these things are important to the league and that he will avoid those types of situations in the future.

On NFL personal conduct policy:

I think the players are getting enough of a reminder on this issue. I speak about it frequently. We send documentation to the players. I think they understand the responsibility. And I think that of our players in general, I’m very proud of what they do. We have great representatives in our community. In reality, you have a few players that do things that are inconsistent with those policies. Unfortunately, they get a lot of attention but that’s the reality of our world.

On advice to Lynch:

I think you have to balance that with what his legal rights are and what was being done. He was cooperative. The district attorney has indicated that, so I think  you have to balance your legal rights and what you have to do to protect yourself individually. And I want our players to make sure that they do that properly, and they have good counsel and that’s important to have.

On this being his first training camp visit:

I do a series of training camp visits every year; I’ll be doing roughly eight to 10 this season. And I haven’t been here to Rochester and I wanted to be here, and the Senator was available so it was a good opportunity for us all to be here.

On attending Toronto game:

I don’t know yet. Not the preseason game. I know have a conflict on that.

On Toronto series:

I think it’s been very successful in making the Bills stronger in western New York, which is our effort here to make sure the Bills stay here successfully in western New York by expanding the region in which they draw fans. It’s bringing more people down from Toronto. They’re spending more money in western New York. It’s good for western New York; it’s good for the Bills; and so far it’s been a great success.

On Kemp and Cuomo’s interests to buy:

I’m aware they have a special fund that’s created for investments in to NFL and other sports teams. We have a very strong policy that we want a principal owner that speaks for the team, speaks to the community but also is a representative on the league level. They’re aware of those policies if they want to own an NFL team, that those opportunities exist, but it’s very important for us to have a principal owner like Mr. Wilson that will not only represent the team and the community, but also participate in league level matters.

On if he’s heard from Kemp or Cuomo:

I’ve talked to them about their concept many times. We have others that have had very similar concepts and that were interested in ownership throughout the league.

REDSKINS MAKE ROSTER MOVES

ASHBURN, VA - The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed defensive tackle Zarnell Fitch and guard Fred Matua. In addition, the team waived/injured guard Kerry Brown and defensive end J.T. Mapu.

The 6-foot-3, 320-pound Fitch spent two games on Baltimore’s active roster in 2007, where he was inactive for one contest and did not play in the other. He also spent 13 weeks on the Ravens’ practice squad, where he finished the season. Fitch will wear jersey number 75R.

Fitch originally signed with the New York Jets’ practice squad on December 27, 2006 and was allocated by the club to NFL Europa that spring. Playing for Frankfurt, Fitch participated in all 10 games with five starts, finishing with 23 tackles and aiding the Galaxy to their fifth World Bowl appearance.

The Spencer, Okla., native played two seasons at Texas Christian (2004-05) after transferring from Navarro (Texas) Junior College. The 25-year-old Fitch was born on July 6, 1983.

The 6-foot-2, 310-pound Matua was originally drafted in the seventh round of the 2006 draft (217th overall) by Detroit. After being released prior to the start of the regular season, he was signed to Tennessee’s practice squad on September 3, 2006 and later signed by Cleveland to the active roster on October 28, 2006. Matua spent the final 10 weeks on the Browns’ 53-man roster and was inactive for nine contests and did not play in the other. He will wear jersey number 78W.

The Lakewood, Calif., native was an All-American at USC where he played from 2002-05.

Brown signed with the Redskins as a college free agent out of Appalachian State on April 30, 2008. Mapu re-signed with the Redskins on July 22.
